The salads can wait

Smack bang in the middle of winter, I’ve found myself chatting excitedly to Mr.5 about the first springtime cherry blossoms, the scent of flowers in the air, trips to the beach, warm sunny days. Hurry up Spring!

However.

A Melbourne winter may bring with it bitterly cold days and what seems like weeks of grey skies. But it’s also a foodie’s paradise – and never more so than in winter, in my opinion. Fortunately or unfortunately, our climate lends itself perfectly to rich, nourishing comfort food..

Today our local farmer’s market was held down by the bay. And despite the cold, what delights it presented us with! Little egg custard tarts. Mini flourless orange cakes
topped with poached quince, almonds and a dusting of icing sugar. Fresh artisan-style baguette and ciabatta. Organic pumpkin, carrots and broccoli.

The boys excitedly feeding the animals at the animal farm, tenderly patting the rabbits and guinea pigs. Lattes made just right. Wagyu beef sausage rolls. Freshly-made roasted peanut butter made from Queensland peanuts. Masses of bargain-priced jonquils.

Then, carrying our goodies home, with frozen fingers and noses, we all sought refuge in the living room and kitchen: making homemade pumpkin soup, bruschetta, and Poh’s macadamia choc-chip cookies.

I do miss the sun…but the salads can wait!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend,

  1. So funny you talking about winter and we’re in summer here. Crazy how easy we can now access other people so quickly and know what is going on across the world! I love summer, but I also love pumpkin soup!

  2. Mmm how great is winter comfort food?! It feels so wrong eating salad in winter when there is soup and cookies to be eaten instead 🙂 xxx

  3. I’m really not enjoying winter. Our house is freezing, and I long for central heating again. I find it much harder to get warmer than to stay cool in summer. Please come back summer, I have a huge range of delicious salads I want to try to make!!
